Supreme Court Pushes for Enhanced Facilities for Women Lawyers and Judges

This is Supreme Court Calls for Better Facilities for Women Lawyers, Judges

A Step Towards Gender-Sensitive Justice

A landmark judgment, the Supreme Court of India has looked to the need to upgrade women lawyers’ and judges’ facilities and infrastructure in the country. The judgment is a giant leap towards inclusive and equal court culture, settling age-old complaints against poor standards of facilities and gender-insensitive working conditions at courts.

Closing the Gender Gap in the Judiciary

Women now make up a growing proportion of the legal community but face as varied a range of issues as subpar bathrooms and child care areas to negligible safety measures in courthouse facilities. The Supreme Court directive aims to bridge this gap by providing similar levels of access, comfort, and respect to women of the judiciary.

Focus on Infrastructure and Accessibility

The Court has urged state governments and bar councils to create welfare facilities in the shape of infrastructural development — from standalone wash rooms, crèches, and baby-changing rooms to improved light and sanitation facilities in court buildings. For woman lawyers and judges, of course, but for women litigants too, who spend hours on end on court campuses with no minimum facilities.

Setting a Precedent for Institutional Change

By giving gender-sensitive reforms topmost priority, the Supreme Court is also leading the other professional associations in the right direction. Not only are women lawyers being heard more, but more and more young women are also being encouraged to pursue law without discrimination in the system.

Conclusion: The Supreme Court’s step in the direction of putting pressure on improved facilities for woman judges and lawyers is a step in the right direction on the long path to equality in India’s legal system. Justice begins with equal working conditions – and this step supports the master plan for empowering woman in the judiciary system.
